BAND BLOG - 2018 IN REVIEW

December 31, 2018

YOU'VE BEEN A BLAST, 2018! Thanks to all of you for helping make it our best year yet. Let's all go out and majestically ride 2019! 🎉🎈

We've pulled together some of our personal highlights from the past 12 months below....

MAIDA VALE

In January, we were lucky enough to be invited to the iconic BBC Maida Vale Studios London for a live session. It's safe to say we'd never been as collectively nervous/excited when we walked in. We set up and ran through the songs a few times before the cameras rolled and were in a room doing some vocal warm-ups when someone popped their head round the door and told us that the piano James was sat at was played by none other than Sir Paul McCartney himself on the Beatles' Maida Vale session. It was genuinely one of the greatest experiences we've had, so a huge thanks to Huw Stephens, BBC Music Introducing and BBC Radio 1 for making this happen. It was one of the things you can tell your nana about and she knows what it is. That's how much of a big deal it was!

UK HEADLINE TOUR

This tour had it all. For those who were there, you'll remember that the "Beast from the East'" was pounding the UK that week in March. Every day when we set off, we weren't sure whether the shows were going to be cancelled or not because of the snow. Despite this, every show went ahead, and we were blown away by the reaction. It's the tour we'll always look back on as a really special one: our first proper headline tour selling out and to end it all with our biggest hometown show at Church Leeds was the icing on top of a fucking massive cake. Confetti canons galore. We even had the pleasure of bringing the wonderful Vistas out with us, so what more could you ask for. To everyone who came to the shows, made the shows happen, cleared the roads so we could get there, a big kiss to you all.

CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK/USA

We embarked on our first trans-atlantic excursion in May. We were welcomed in Toronto with open arms and lovely weather. Our HQ for the week was a rather cool house in Koreatown where we were greeted by a random cat inside. After taking 1000s of photographs of fire hydrants, street signs, and other every day items, it was time to play some music. Despite us having meltdowns due to all of our gear not working, the generosity and kindness of our Canadian saviour's at Long & McQuade (Toronto) meant that our debut shows outside Europe went off without a hitch (apart from our jet lagged manager falling asleep at the back of the room as we played). We sampled all the food in the world, went to the baseball, had a pint at Niagara Falls, filmed a music video, caught up with some old friends, saw the various waterfalls of upstate NY, and drank 10 gallons of coffee at the The State Diner in Ithaca. All in all, a whirlwind 9 days which we'll never forget.

LEEDS & READING

Festival season as a whole was class this year, but to be able to finish it off at Leeds and Reading Festival was bloody lovely. We've been going to Leeds Festival since we were 15, and we've all watched our favourite bands play the Radio 1 (NME) stage. So to be one of the bands on there this year was pretty surreal. We pulled up backstage in our trusty post office van Pat. Surrounded by massive sleeper buses and various people like LilPump and Diplo knocking about, we couldn't help but laugh to ourselves. Honestly we thought there would be maybe about 50 people there dotted about. It's a massive tent. Massive, massive. It turns out there was more than 50, and we spent the next few weeks showing everyone we knew these photos of how sick it was. So, here they are once more.

FICKLE FRIENDS UK TOUR

We ended the year by joining Fickle Friends on their UK tour. We love going on tour, especially when the other band is nice. Fickle Friends were very nice indeed and we had a wonderful time We learned a lot from them and got to play venues we've always dreamed of. Just before we played O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, Cale and James were having a casual chat walking around the maze that is backstage, and all of a sudden turned on to stage without realising. It was one of those "Eh?! Where are we...what's going on??" moments. BUT WHAT A LOVELY PLACE IT IS. The tour even had a big reunion show in Nottingham, which is something that you rarely get to do. We THEN booked onto a festival in Cardiff which Fickle Friends were also playing, and at that point, we'd gone from supporting Fickle Friends to stalking them - sorry about that FF.

HNY to you, you lovely people. ❤️🎈
